A Beach Holiday - explore the world's best beaches and plan your perfect beach holiday.

My favourite beach activity - a great original beach story by Jaklien on a beach holiday.

My favourite beach activity
Ever since I was around 3 or 4 years old, every summer my parents would pack me and my little brother up and drive down to the Spanish Costas in search of some greatly missed sun. The Spanish coast used to be, and might still be, a bit of a melting pot of All these European nationalities escaping the dreary weather of their own country. How me and my little brother used to love playing on the beach, making friends and sand castles.

Over the years my favorite beach activities changed a little bit and one of my all time favorite was to guess what country my fellow beach visitors were from. It's funny how some nationalities just stick out like a sore thumb. Take my own fellow countrymen for instance. The Dutch are so cheap that they always bring their own lunch, usually sandwiches filled with something like chocolate sprinkles that they have brought on holidays with them from Holland. The exhibitionists that they are, the do not hesitate to change into their bathing suits right in front of everybody on the beach.

Then we have the Germans. They are a bit harder to spot, because they have this strange habit to dig massive holes in the sand, where they crawl into afterwards. To this day I have no clue what the advantage is of lying in a hole like that. I suspect it must have something to do with having a more overall sun exposure. Of course you can't miss the Italians. You can usually hear them coming towards the beach; loud music on their stereos, 12 children and 5 dogs that decide to shake off all the sand from the beach right next to your beach towel.

Than last but not least there are the Brits. You'll be able to recognise them from the light reflecting of their legs that haven't seen any sun light in decades. Or if you catch them on their second day on the beach the colour of their skin might vary between light pink to a deep lobster red depending on how long they were exposed. Next time you'll find yourself on a beach on the Costa Blanca or the Costa Brava, give it a go and you'll find how culturally diverse us Europeans really are. Or just plain weird, depending on how you look at it.
