The best beach in the world - a great original beach story by Jaklien on a beach holiday.

The best beach in the world
Now I know lying on the beach is not for everybody. As much as I love to relax and top up my tan, even I get bored after a few hours of doing nothing and baking in the sun. If I don't have a good book or some snorkelling equipment or a beach companion to talk to at hand, I get itchy feet after a few hours of lying on my beach lounger. As odd as that seems. But I know of a beach that even the most avid beach haters would love to go to. A beach where you will not get bored, even after hours and hours of lying here. It's Maho beach on St Maarten in the Caribbean.

This beach is not like any ole beach. It's actually quite small and there aren't that many beach restaurants or bars around. It's not particularly pretty or idyllic. It's not really about the looks of this beach, but more of the entertainment. The main attraction of this beach is that it's located right behind the runway of Juliana International Airport. It's the main airport of the island and this is where the big Boeings from the US and Europe, loaded with masses of tourists fly in and out of. Even if you're not an airline geek this is a very exciting beach to be at and you can spend hours here watching the planes land and take off. Lie on the beach and see the belly of the 767's glide through the sky above you as they come into landing right behind you on the airstrip.

It's quite a thrilling experience to be right underneath a plane of this size. Believe you me. Or if you're a bit of a nutcase (I have to admit that I was one of them for a few times...) wait till the same 767's take off and hold on to the gate behind them as the blasting engines blow you away while they speed up on the runway. Make sure your bikini is tied on well, or you might run the risk of losing it. Also you might want to hold your breath for a few minutes as the fumes of the thrusting engines you inhale will take off ten years of your life. If not more. If this is all a bit too much of an adrenaline kick for you, there is a bar on the side of the beach where you can sip on an exotic cocktail at the Sunset Beach Bar and watch the loony people on the beach get crazy about the planes. This might actually be more entertaining than the landing and taking off of the planes themselves.
