Cook Islands - a great original beach story by Jaklien on a beach holiday.

Cook Islands
This small island group in the South Pacific may seem like a bit of a long trek to get to, but believe me, once you get there, you will never want to leave again. The sand is as white as snow and the water crystal clear. Time is not important and the pace is slow. What better place to get away from the daily grind back home? I checked out a few resorts on the islands of Rarotonga and Aitutaki that will give your stay in the Cooks that little extra and make it truly unforgettable .

Rumours is perfect for a honeymoon or romantic getaway. It's a resort where you won't see or meet any of the other guests. Each villa is tucked away behind a wooden fence and they all have a private courtyard with swimming pool. Some even have their own mini waterfall. All bungalows have a sundeck with access to the beach. There is no restaurant on site, but you can book a chef who will prepare your gourmet dinner in the privacy of your villa or better even, right on the beach. Can you think of anything more romantic? Rumours has villas on both Rarotonga and Aitutaki.

The Pacific Resort is a luxury mini chain located on Rarotonga as well as on Aitutaki. They both are decorated with lots of dark wood and wicker furniture that gives the place that authentic Polynesian atmosphere. I stayed in a three bedroom Lagoon Villa at the resort on Rarotonga. It's of a perfect size for a group of friends or a family, but might be a tad too large for honeymooners. Choose one of the Garden Studios if it's just for the two of you. Even though it's quite a big resort it has a very cosy feel to it as all the bungalows seem to be somewhat hidden behind shrubbery and other local vegetation. There is an excellent restaurant on the premises which sits right on the beach and looks out onto the lagoon. Torches are lit in the evening and to give the guests that true Polynesian experience, there is a Polynesian show every night after dinner. The resort on Aitutaki has the same standard and offers an equally luxurious service. It's a bit smaller and all bungalows and rooms look out onto the beach so you can wake up and dive straight into the ocean. If you can't decide at which one of the two resorts to stay, book one of the combo packages on offer on Pacific Resort's website.

My favourite place to stay is Etu Moana on Aitutaki. It might not be as luxurious as the previous resorts, but it has a very relaxed vibe to it. It?s a small resort with only eight tastefully decorated bungalows set around a dipping pool, which gives it a serene atmosphere. Follow the path that meanders around the grounds and you will eventually walk out onto the white sandy beach. Kayak and snorkelling gear is free for guests to use and breakfast is served in the pool area every morning.
