Port Nolloth, South Africa beach guide & holiday information
Located on the Diamond Coast, Port Nolloth is where one of South Africa's Blue Flag beaches is found... McDougall's Bay is a jewel of holiday spot, no pun intended. Just seven miles outside Port Nolloth it presents vacation opportunities of the highest grades.
With a beautiful blue tidal lagoon that is sheltered and safe for children to swim in, and birds of every hue to fill the hot, dry air with song. The surrounding country is arid and dry, typical of a desert region, and rainfall is low, very low. The red earth of Namaqualand seems devoid of life ... that is until one of the areas rare but fierce thunder storms strikes.
People stand in awe of nature's spectacle and drink in the marvelous scent of dry earth being replenished by rain. As the rolling thunder gathers momentum and strikes the earth in deafening, blinding flashes of lightning, flowers that have been in a deep sleep, sometimes for years, now spring into life. Their precious seeds soon cover the hills and plains in a magnificent display of daisies and succulents. There are a number of activities that can be enjoyed by the more adventurous, such as kayaking, diving, surfing or parasailing or hiking one of the clearly marked trails. For others of a more sedentary nature there is bird watching and swimming and just relaxing or making friends with the locals.
Accommodation comes in the form of different establishments in or around Port Nolloth and McDougall's Bay, from guesthouses or self-catering flats to cabanas and cottages, perfect for families with children or single travelers who are of-course fully catered to.
