Recife, Brazil beach guide & holiday information
At first glance, Recife appears dull, dingy, and dusty with a nondescript skyline, but there is more to this destination when investigated more fully. There are the beaches, churches and leafy suburbs of the city, plus nightlife of note. After all this is Brazil, and Brazil knows how to party.
Olinda is only six kilometres from Recife, is a UNESCO Heritage sight, and believed to be the origin of Brazilian culture. This is where the 'Carnaval' takes place. Everybody joins in the fun and everyone wears colourful costumes. The spirit of friendliness and excitement carry the crowd along in an exhilarating rhythm of dance and laughter. If the celebrations have been too enthusiastic, the badly behaved and repentant tourist can go for spiritual refreshment at any number of churches the following Sunday.
Recife is Brazil's fourth largest city and has the second largest shopping centre so Mom can do her thing while Dad goes off to watch the football. The Casa de Cultura has overcome its history of being the local prison and is now home to craft-shops where the traveller can buy souvenirs of their trip to Recife. For the younger, more virile visitor there are always the beaches. Boa Viagem beach is about the best, and has the advantage of being lined with restaurants and bars. Also in the Boa Viagem Beach, accommodation comes in a variety of choices from grand hotels to B&B's, to backpacker hostels.
Therefore, while Recife, Brazil is maybe not one of the fabulous destinations, it does have its own charm and as such will offer the traveller and his family an interesting and fun-filled vacation. Population for the city of Recife is around 1,478,118
