Barcelona, the second largest city in Spain and the capital of Catalonia, lies on the Mediterranean coast between the Llobregat and Besòs river mouths, and is bordered by the Serra de Collserola ridge in the west. After its founding as a Roman city, and having been besieged many times during its elaborate and fascinating history, Barcelona has developed into a significant cultural centre and a leading vacation destination.

This is a progressive a city where past fuses with future in an animated present, and this is demonstrated in the architectural works of Antoni Gaudí and Lluís Domènech i Montaner, some of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, to the recent works of Jean Nouvel.
