Barcelona, the second largest city in Spain and the capital of Catalonia, lies on the Mediterranean coast between the Llobregat and Besòs river mouths, and is bordered by the Serra de Collserola ridge in the west. After its founding as a Roman city, and having been besieged many times during its elaborate and fascinating history, Barcelona has developed into a significant cultural centre and a leading vacation destination.
