Sun seekers the world over come to Biarritz to revel in the sun-kissed beaches, surf the waves or play on the velvet smooth golf-courses, making Biarritz one of the premier destinations in France. This is the town where the wife of Napoleon 111, Empress Eugenie, built a palace on the beach. In this luxurious home she invited foreign royalty and dignitaries for din-dins and probably quite a few "chin chins". Her impressive guest lists included names such as Queen Victoria of Britain, as well as her prime ministers, Benjamin Disraeli or his old rival The Right Honourable William Gladstone. Today, however, her beautiful palace has taken on a different persona as the world class "Hotel du Palais".
The Russian nobility who visited the Empress were so taken with Biarritz and the palace they built their own splendid Orthodox Church next door. Exploring the town one can only be impressed by its magnificent architecture that is a mix of 19th century mansions and residences built of stone and once belonging to the peerage and other such fortunate beings. The activities available for the sports-minded include Golf on any one of a dozen or so world class courses, one of which is Golf de Biarritz le Phare. This course covers over 34 hectares and is situated dead centre of the town. There are also tours of Biarritz and visits to interesting establishments from the early days of this great holiday spot. Families with children can find entertainment in the various events and festivals, amusement centers and of-course the beaches.
